How to Remove Text Watermarks from Images

Text watermarks come off images more cleanly than any other watermark type: upload the image, mask the text, and AI inpainting rebuilds the background behind the letters. Solid or semi-transparent names, dates, captions, and app stamps over uniform or textured backgrounds usually disappear without visible traces.

Steps to remove a text watermark

  1. Upload your image to the watermark remover — JPG, PNG, or WebP up to 10 MB.
  2. Brush over the text. Cover the letters completely; thin fonts need a careful pass so no stroke is left half-masked.
  3. Process and check at full zoom. Text over plain backgrounds is usually gone in one pass. Re-mask any ghosting and run again.

Why text watermarks are the easy case

Text sits on top of the image rather than replacing image content — the watermark is a thin layer, and the background behind it is often uniform or gently textured (sky, walls, water, paper, product backgrounds). Inpainting models excel at extending simple patterns, so the reconstructed area matches its surroundings.

Semi-transparent text is only slightly harder than solid text: the mask covers the same area, and the model replaces the blended pixels with clean background.

The three text cases that leave traces

Text over small text. A watermark crossing a paragraph or a sign leaves the model no complete letters to extend from — expect smudged glyphs. Text over faces or hair. Same rule as any watermark: fine human detail reconstructs softly. Text over hard geometric edges. Rooflines, window frames, brick rows crossing the masked zone can drift or bend, because the model must guess where the line continues. Manual clone-stamping beats AI on regular geometry.

Removing dates and timestamps from scanned photos

Old photo-lab date stamps (orange "95 12 24" digits in a corner) are a classic use case: small, uniform background, solid color. Mask the digits plus a 1–2 pixel margin and inpaint — the paper or sky grain behind them reconstructs almost perfectly. For old photo restoration projects, remove the timestamp first, then run restoration passes.

Captions and subtitles on screenshots

Removing hardcoded subtitles from video screenshots works, but heavily compressed video frames give the model noisy texture to extend, so patches are softer than on still photos. Mask one subtitle line at a time rather than the whole lower third.

FAQ

Does it remove text without a mask? AiFixMark uses a brush mask you control, which is more precise than fully automatic detection — the AI only touches what you mark. Can it remove text from a PDF or video? No — the tool handles images (JPG/PNG/WebP). Export a frame or page as an image first. Is removing a text watermark legal? Yes for images you own or are licensed to edit (your own date stamps, your studio's marks on your photos). Removing others' copyright notices to reuse their work is infringement.
